“Destiny” (2016), portrays a saw sharpener called Destiny, based in “Makoko” Sawmill, Lagos, Nigeria. The work contains itself solely on Destiny’s hut – which in itself becomes an almost reverential motif. Area boys (local gang members) confide in him – a makeshift father figure. Wood suppliers depend on him to keep business running smoothly. It’s unusual, but Destiny is the
only saw sharpener who works for himself. A symbol of autonomy in a community, “Makoko”, which aspires to the same independence from the Lagos State government.
The film is directed in parts, with area boys and labourers as extras. A handmade dolly pans the camera repetitively, to slow and meditative effect.
The work is projected on a 4000x2250mm sheet of oxidised steel, its dark rusty patina absorbing the image and providing a layer of texture and materiality.
