2018

Title:
Power Man

Year:
2018

Running time:
5.00 minutes

Format:
HD digital film, colour with sound

Two channel projection (projection surface and dimensions variable)

Location:
Lagos, Nigeria

A young man shadow boxes at the break of dawn. Fists drawn, mouth tense, eyes curt and unflinching.

Dark skin recedes into darkness, dim light overhead skims his lithe figure.

Skirmishing in and out of the light with no decipherable opponent.

Perhaps he fights his demons or something much more ominous; he enters the spiritual realm.

On another channel, dull thuds temper reticent night sky.

A young man diligently works, chopping with an axe.

Shot against the light, he blends into the night, never revealing what he cuts.

A sinister quality is palpable.

As the sun rises, golden light casts over his taut frame, highlighting the foreboding blade of the axe.

Directed by the artist, “Power Man” features “area boys” from the slums of Lagos.
