‘re-trace’ (2014) at Voyons Voir, Aix-en-Provence
January 2014

In 2014, I’ll develop a multi-faceted public art work titled ‘Re-Trace’, a project that adopts a triadic approach converging performance, mark making and the moving image.

As part of a residency at ‘Voyons Voir’ – a cultural organisation in Aix-en-Provence – a large outdoor canvas will be installed at a vineyard called ‘Château Grand Boise’.

Based on my interaction with the site’s terrain, I will choreograph a series of movements inspired by the landscape. At the same time, I will use my body’s actions to relay expressive strokes onto the large outdoor canvas.

Employing a ‘Camera Tracing Mechanism’ – a device that I will create to attach a digital camera my back, my body will enable the camera to capture the effects of the performance as it is being enacted.

The camera on my back will simultaneously record the moving landscape while I perform and paint.

Conceptually speaking, the physical painting and the recorded moving image will trace and ‘overlap’ – thus becoming a reflection of each other.

I hope that ‘Re-Trace’ will explore and introduce ideas of fluidity, movement and play in contrast to the monolithic peaks of ‘Mount Sainte-Victoire’ and the imposing verdure of the Château’s enclosing forests, as well as poignant themes of gesture and the body as a kind of ‘mechanism for narration’.
